Description
Yerba Mate is called Ilex Paraguariensis in Latin. Ilex is the Latin name for Stone Oak. Paraguensis refers to the fact that this tree is found in Paraguay. In Dutch, this tree is called mate or maté. Paraguay was once a separate Jesuit state. The Jesuits had a trade monopoly on Yerba Mate at the time. Hence, in some countries, mate drink is still called Jesuit tea.
Mate is a very popular South American drink traditionally drunk from a gourd with a metal straw (bombilla). In many cultures, it is customary to share mate in a circle, with everyone drinking from the same gourd, reinforcing a sense of connection and community.
Mate contains not only caffeine but also theobromine, a substance also found in chocolate and provides a mild, long-lasting energy boost!
