Decoct, a special word! But don’t worry, it’s easier than it sounds. A decoct, or decoction, is simply another way to prepare herbs. It is a powerful method of extracting active ingredients from hard, woody plant parts.
Although an infusion – where you soak the softer parts of a plant in hot water – is a popular method, it is not always suitable for all herbs. Especially when herbs are used for their medicinal properties, it is important to know which preparation method works best. This is where the decoction comes in.
Making a decoction requires a bit more patience than an infusion. This method is intended for the harder parts of a plant, such as roots, bark, seeds and berries. Boiling these plant parts in water releases the valuable substances that would otherwise not be released. This powerful preparation technique has been used for centuries and remains a favorite among herbalists.
Preparing a decoction can vary depending on the desired strength and the type of plant material you use. Often the process begins with cold water, in which the herbs are slowly heated to release their valuable compounds.
Start by adding the spices to cold water in a saucepan. Then slowly bring the water to a boil and let the mixture simmer gently for 15 to 40 minutes. After boiling, let the decoction cool, strain and you can use the mixture.
