Bearberry leaf (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) is found in the cold temperate regions of North America, Europe and Asia. It grows mainly in coniferous forests, heathlands and mountainous areas. The leaves are leathery, oval to oblong, and dark green in color. They remain on the plant throughout the year. Bearberry produces small red berries that are edible but taste very bitter. Animals such as bears and birds sometimes eat them, hence the name “bearberry.” The plant produces small, white or pale pink flowers that grow in clusters. Bearberry leaf is perhaps the most widely known and used herb to treat bladder and urinary tract infections. Its history of medicinal use dates back to at least the 2nd century.
