In what ways can you use loose herbs?
Decoct (decoction) is used to extract the active substances from hard plant parts, such as roots and bark. The process starts with cold water and the herbs are slowly heated and then cooked for 15-40 minutes. Examples include roots such as ginger and turmeric, bark such as cinnamon, and seeds such as cardamom. More Info
Infusion (also known as herbal tea, although technically incorrect) is used for softer plant parts such as leaves and flowers. The herbs are steeped in hot water (90-95 degrees), usually 5-15 minutes depending on the part of the plant. Infusions can be adjusted to taste or for medicinal purposes. More Info
Macerate is a cold water infusion of herbs and is a gentler preparation method than a decoct or infusion. More Info
